Exactly. I know people who call anybody right of centre "nazi". Needless to say, I avoid politics when I’m talking to them.

Ireland is woke, but most woke people here tolerate the centre right. Must have something to do with the fact that our government is centre right, yet supports woke and neoliberal policies like the self-ID gender identity law, mass immigration and COVID lockdowns. Which country do you live in?

USA...and on top of that a hyper progressive area. The state is blue, the county is blue and the city is blue. Everything revolves around "righting the wrongs of the cis white male." I hate it.

That’s fucked up. If it wasn’t for Florida, Texas, South Dakota and Arkansas, and other states like them, I’d write America off as a lost cause.

Well the empire is fading fast. We might not have the all out civil war that fanatics on both sides want but the destruction of the country is well underway.

Balkanisation like what happened to the Roman Empire imminent?

Not technically, because we all speak the same language and are dividing along class and ideological lines rather than ethnic. We are rapidly living in two different countries quite literally. Where I live masking was never strictly enforced and I haven't worn a mask in months. I live in an urban area too.

Since you've brought it up, have you ever heard the term Ulsterisation used similarly before? I just Googled and it apparently has a wildly different definition than I thought. I read a sociology book years ago which defined it as a homogeneous population self-segregating along ideological lines. If that's the case, that would be much more similar to what we're experiencing here. There are liberal neighborhoods in my city that I get uncomfortable being in because of how strident they are about masking and vaccinations. There's also the issue of the higher crime rate and homeless people lining the street because they humor them too much.

We all speak the same language? You're talking about the United States?

We have different languages at home and within different subcultures, but we all speak English to each other. There isn't a part of the U.S. where another language gets used that same way.

We're so absurdly diverse where I live that we end being homogenous. Your politics and class status define who you are more than your religion or race.

Ulsterisation! That’s the word. From what I’ve been seeing online, there are two very different Americas: one where there are draconian covid rules and one where people are free like we all were in 2019. I’m jealous that you could get away with not wearing a mask. Masks don’t work. We still have to wear them indoors in Ireland, even if you’re vaccinated.

What do you think your government's goal is with that? Wasn't the guy in charge at the beginning of all of this a doctor?

There was always an antipathy to the masks here because of the heavy association they have with the Democratic Party in the U.S. Trump rarely (if ever?) wore a mask when he was in office. We also had an indoor mandate, but a lot of local businesses just declined to enforce it and the city declined to fine them for it.

It's always been pretty obvious the masks are for show. I worked through the pandemic and we didn't even start wearing masks until 2 months in. You couldn't get them. Our director famously said at one of our first pandemic staff meetings, "If I had masks, I'd be selling them." 😝

Also, since somebody jumped in to correct me, I should clarify that Americans speak dozens of ethnic languages at home and within immigrant communities, but we speak English to each other and all business is conducted in English. I'm even including Spanish in that. That's what I meant by "we speak the same language."

Im not sure how its going to pan out. Im just a random nobody whose read a bit of history. I do know it will be bad in a myriad of ways though. History has been pretty clear on that front.

History never repeats, but history always rhymes.
