I’ve had similar conversations with my parents, and both are glad that I’m a normal person who happens to be gay. My dad is entirely switched on to this whole thing, knowing that it’s impossible to change your sex, so he doesn’t agree with any of the transgender stuff. My mam supports transgender people, but she objects to non-binary gender identities, knows that the word pansexual is stupid, finds the word cis offensive, and while she supports transsexual people, she firmly believes that rights come with responsibilities and is not afraid to criticise the transgender movement. She sympathises with JK Rowling, believes that transgender people should use a gender neutral toilet, and believes that you should be over 21 to get a sex change. It’s refreshing that my parents support me while also opposing how crazy the alphabet soup movement has become.

I think that these are very mainstream beliefs. I don't think most people seriously understand that the 'trans rights' movement is about allowing males to self ID into women's protected spaces and opportunities, nor what the medicalization of 'trans kids' actually entails. If they did, they'd be appalled, but everything has been couched in euphemisms about 'trans equality' and 'gender affirming' surgeries so that it's hidden from view.
