Call me cynical, but I suspect that the Mr. Gay England contest is actually banking on the Chiyo controversy to get media attention. After all, who's ever heard of this competition before? As I understand it, the contest has just been revived after no one held it for three years, which speaks to a general lack of interest.

In other words, who knows what the organizers of the contest really believe about Chiyo's sex or status as a gay man? What is clear, however, is that it puts them in a media spotlight and positions them as having the "right" opinions. And Chiyo will probably win -- for the same reasons.

Everyone remembers Time magazine putting Caitlyn Jenner on the cover as "Woman of the Year," and I'm sure that's exactly what Time magazine's editors wanted.
