Thank you for sharing. It's interesting that my first thought is "wow they're allowed to publish this story in 2021?" But that is giving too much faith to people's critical thinking skills. They've learned to turn their brain off and not think when it comes to gender ideology and re-pathologizing same-sex attraction and gender non-conformity.

(edit: also I'm open to other flair suggestions, the article is kind of a piece of LGB history and the topic is historical so I flaired it as that.)

Similarities and differences between lobotomy movement and the "sex reassignment" movement?

Just off the top of my head:

Similarities

  • Both pseudosciences.

  • Both pathologize same-sex-attracted people and aim to "change" one's sexual orientation.

  • Both expanded to be performed on a wide variety of demographics-- in the case of "sex reassignment" surgeries, that includes teenage straight girls with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and men with autogynephilia (AGP), as well as LGB teens.

Differences

  • Lobotomy movement was not specifically targeted at LGB people from the beginning, unlike "sex reassignment" surgery and transgender ideology. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

  • Different organs damaged. (Lobotomy damaging brain, "sex reassignment" surgeries damaging/removing reproductive organs and effectively castrating victims)

A true story of courage. And now she gets to be part of the alphabet.

You know what the fucked up part of this is? The TQ crowd will look at a story like this and have the nerve to compare it to normal, non gender affirming therapy. They'll say a therapist helping a dysphoric person be comfortable in their body is on the same level as the people who tried to lobotomize Luchia. They'll say it's 'conversion therapy' for trans people because 'being trans isn't an illness'. When the real parallel is exactly what you said. Hormones and surgery for LGBs and GNC people is no different than what almost happened to Luchia.
