at least back to ancient Greece. Being homosexual, or having sex with men was not an issue so long as you took on a "masculine" (penetrative) role, but being "feminine" (the receptive partner) was not ok.

As I understand it, in addition to the gender stuff, there was also a layer of, "it's ok to go have homo sex as long as it doesn't get in the way of your hetero duty to marry and have kids and whatnot." It wasn't really ok to be strictly gay; it was ok to be bi if your same-sex relationships didn't get in the way of your cross-sex ones.

Is that right, or am I mixing up my history?
