I'll tell you what. 20 years ago, my first days in college at a west coast LGBT+ friendly big city, and going to the room that housed the (I forget what they called it, the GSA? The LGBT club?) and it was all tattooed, punk-rock clothing, colored hair, facial piercings, and I just stood there in my plaid shirt and white singlet and baggy jeans and skate shoes (yes, I was a total cliche) like................... Oh.... Uh.... Okay.... This is not the place where someone like me fits in... I guess....

But I never felt "not queer enough" because I am NOT queer at all. I just looked at these people like "Wow... Okay, this is like a different type of gay?" In reality, these were the ancestors of the Queers, already scaring away the normal LGB and T even back then.

So many botched opportunities to tell these crazy people to piss off. So many botched opportunities. But I’m glad many of us are waking up now.

This is actually a really comforting story.

Were they really gay though? Maybe they were and you could've made some unlikely friends?

It was the club for LGBT people so I'm assuming they were all LGBT somehow, or "allies." They were all older too, so it was a little intimidating (when you're 18, even 20-year-olds feel old, and these people, to my squishy little teenaged brain felt like they were at least mid-20's and up. It was a state school so it was normal to see students older than 18-22 there.) I ended up making A LOT of L and G friends at that school, and a few B's, but all of them I either met in class, or through friends-of-friends.

OMG I just remembered the first B I ever met there. Within like... 5 minutes of meeting her, she was telling me about her Hello Kitty vibrator, and I had never experienced that level of TMI before from someone I barely knew, I was so traumatized LOL On the outside I was grinning and going "Oh... Wow... Okay!" and on the inside I was like... dying. hahahaha
