This illustrates perfectly why we need to drop the T. If same-sex couples cannot discuss our shared experiences without being accused of bigotry, we cannot speak for ourselves as a distinct group of people.

This so much! I think that the issue is that people think too much just about identity. And sure, being able to identify openly as gay is important for me, it'd be awful if I had to pretend to be straight to everyone. But groups are not just about identity. There are real world consequences tied to the differences between different groups. We can't possibly discuss and study these differences if everybody is claiming to be different groups.

Sure, there are differences within a group itself. There are gay men out there who will say "I've never experienced homophobia" in a poll. But the poll results will be very different if half of the gay men you interview are actually straight.

By the way, in the topic of real life differences between different groups... I think it'd be interesting to see data on how many transmen who get pregnant claim to be men when it's time to get father's leave, or how many transmen claim to be men when it's time to retire, or how many transmen claim to be men in countries where military service is only mandatory for men...

You nailed it. People are treating being gay like it’s a country club to join instead of a phenomenon with realities attached. This mentality inevitably leads to members of the group being unable to advocate for themselves. In turn, the group will end up in basically same situation they were in before the country club moved in.

I’d be interested in those figures too. I am also eternally interested in the fact that the only time you hear about transmen in the news is because they’re pregnant. Because, you know, celebrating females only for our ability to carry children is remarkably progressive.

But tumblr told me that straight people are boring, so I wanna be gay now!

Interesting point about these news. With how popular these articles about pregnant transmen get, it's kinda surprising that you never see anyone bringing up the topic of father/mother leave.

I mean, ideally there shouldn't be this difference, parents of both sexes should get a fair leave. But the reality is that in most countries a trans man would get a way bigger leave than a gay man that adopted a kid.

Gay men and lesbian women don't have the option to simply identify as the opposite sex when it's convenient. If you really claim that you are the opposite sex and there is no difference between you and a cis gay/lesbian, then at the very least you should also keep that opposite sex identity even when it's not convenient.
