We used to insult each other online with words like faggot and nigger while we played BroodWar Fastest 4v4 and no one got banned and no one got in trouble. Now on Reddit the internet is so fragile that if you DARE speak the truth and not use any insults you will IMMEDIATELY GET BANNED.

I got banned for saying a trans woman is not a woman. No insults no nothing. I tried to walk on egg shells and I tripped a mine.

There was actually a counter-movement to use real identities online from the beginning. Usenet was used for professional collaboration by many, where names were important. Many public discussion groups had people bitching about anons. Online newspapers often required or encouraged using real names in their discussion threads.

I guess the thinking was that using real names would keep discussions more civil - people wouldn't post such nasty things using their real names. They were wrong though.

I have no problem with people saying mean things to me online so long as I can block them.

It was during the age when everyone knew it unwise to share real names and information anywhere online.

This makes me long for a different time. When we understood how dangerous the world is, and we appreciated our privacy.

I miss classical forums. Almost every community is on Discord now, but it sucks because it's hard to have any serious discussions there.

I miss the old days... Before unlimited dial up we used to have a very active local BBS too. Shared all kinds of stuff! I miss it a lot. I caught my first computer virus from it! I was the Stoned Empire Monkey Virus.
