Thing is, openstreetmaps and other services haven't picked up in developing countries etc. As I said, it works better than expected but, for example, I will never use it outside the city anywhere that is not a highway. If something changes, these maps aren't going to be updated as fast as google maps. I don't want it drive off a cliff or anything (yet). I'm sure osm works really well in the developed world where it has many contributors.

It's not a difficult thing for people like you and I. But what about the layman? Not so easy for him. I've done it a few times now, but still the big disclaimers and warnings often scare people as you said. And sometimes problems are faced - sometimes as easy as a bad connection. Problem is that a large number of ppl find themselves completely clueless when a command window throws an unfriendly looking error message at them.
