Cut throat means someone who will stop at nothing to get what they want, including destroying other people's opportunities.

Her success is baffling. I tried watching a season of American Horror Story that she was in, but found her too distracting because everything about her is unpleasant to me.

Yes, it is a standard word in English. It means willing to do anything to get what you want, so yes, also would include taking opportunities from others and redistributing them to yourself and friends.

I must say I did enjoy her performance in the 2nd season of AHS - Asylum. IMHO the only good season of AHS.

I think that's the one I had to stop watching because I find her so annoying and her face was too distracting. I can't remember what bothered me - fillers (plastic surgery)?
