It's a social networking app that uses facial recognition to weed men out during the automated account set up.

So, here's my recollection of what went down. Anyone else can chime in:

Sall tried to debut it to r/gendercritical.

She received a lot of feedback that the app was: a) not women-only because she was letting trans women in on purpose, b) the term "girl" was viewed as degrading or condescending by a lot of adult women, c) the word "Giggle" was offputting to women who fight to be taken seriously and d) so, so pink, which is reminiscent of gender stereotypes and the pink tax. Also e) facial recognition is creepy.

She told us TWAW and blew off our feedback.

Then she came back months later and basically said we'd been right and trans activists were bombarding her with threats.

...and now this. Make of it what you will.

Yeah, facial recognition is a major problem no for me

I'm thinking that information is being sold, along with post data, web site browsing, to someone for "reasons".

I don’t think there’s any reason to think that the data is being sold. The creator just wanted to create a space for women and facial recognition is the only way to do it. Dating apps also use pics of your face and info and they aren’t selling your data for nefarious reasons.

YET

Even though they aren't selling now, doesn't mean they NEVER will...

But some of them do? You think some of those sites are free for altruistic reasons? There is a reason why tech douche bros are tech douche Bros, they make shit ton of money, 4 times the median household income while single and in their early twenties. It’s why they are able to shut us down. They have money and they make it by selling data.

That’s true, so do you also not use Facebook, Instagram or dating apps? I’d prefer for a woman, especially one who wants to screen out men, to create those apps and get rich. I use all the aforementioned apps and I see nothing wrong with doing the same for one that’s only for women.

I use Facebook sparingly. That said, I also don’t voice my GC ness too publicly since I sadly work with those aforementioned tech douche Bros. She put a bullseye on her users back by making it female only AND using facial recognition. We are hiding in a shitty alt right website because of wrong think. You think we would be safe on an app targeted to us. They’ll be selling the data. If they sold it to other women run business that would be nice but considering how this pandemic has caused issues with women’s jobs and pushed them out of the public sphere, it’s unlikely. It will probably go to some men who need to control the messaging to women. And I’m not ok with that.

Edit: and this is another thing that many people are not connecting the dots with. Why would they target women’s spaces now in the middle of a pandemic when they didn’t bother before? Because the pandemic has decimated women’s financial status. Women have lost more jobs than any demographic, they have been forced to take up traditional gender roles and even working single mothers are having choose between their child’s education and work. Increasingly women have been targeted for layoffs. In other words, we don’t have money so no reason to target us with ads because we aren’t as a class buying shit. Most women are struggling to survive and not lose their homes. We became expendable. The only “women” with jobs are the ones who have penises. Because for some reason corporations have zero problem knowing who the men are.

But men can't be screened out. Men only need an ally hand over a photo

[–]zephyranthes 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Why an ally? Get a random photo from the internet. Or get one guaranteed to be unique from "this person does not exist". Or faceapp one's own mug.

This facial recognition thing was never meant to protect women, it wasn't even meant to gather useful face data (lots of cheaper faces on the internet already). It's purely a buzzword to attract investors with more money than common sense chasing the next big thing.

I'm very much clueless when it comes to tech. I thought a photo would need to come from the phone that has the app. That it could be a random photo is beyond disturbing

there's an old saying, when a product is free then you are the product
