Somehow I scored 58% masc and 58% feminine; which ya'know shouldn't be possible as it goes over 100 percent. Anyway, most of these traits just seem like normal human values; stuff like loyalty, compassion, caring for others.

[–]reluctant_commenter 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No, it is entirely possible and makes sense.

Masculinity and femininity are not opposing qualities, at least in this conceptualization. One could be "100% masculine, or endorse all the masculine items, and simultaneously "50%" feminine, for example.

If anyone is curious and wants to read more, it looks like this questionnaire is based off the work of Sandra Bem, a researcher who studied sex and gender. She was a major pioneer in the field. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bem_Sex-Role_Inventory

edit: Another example: if you took a quiz on the psychological constructs of "positive emotionality" and "negative emotionality", you could get 58% and 58% on those, too. Someone who would score 100% and 100% just feels a lot of emotions, period, for example.

You're pretty close tome! 53% male - 44% female "Undifferentiated androgenous"

[–]kdljfkldsfjlk 12 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 0 fun13 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

This is ridiculous, it's just a "hey, how much do you fit sexist gender roles" quiz.

[–]worried19[S] 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Gender itself is sexist, so obviously so are gender roles.

This is just a test to see how well we conform to our natal sex stereotypes. I would bet most of us, QT and GC alike, are nonconformists.

[–]reluctant_commenter 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Right. I think the idea of this test (or the one it was based off of, anyway) was to highlight gender role adherence. No one was talking about it, so they found a bunch of questions that kept correlating to one gender vs the other, and ditched the items that did not have a correlation.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Which sex is supposed to be "imaginative," "energetic," "introverted," and "likable"??

[–]CatbugMods allow rape victim blaming in this sub :) 11 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 0 fun12 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

masculine 78%. I can’t believe there are people who take these tests as anything other than random bits of sexism.

[–]pinkpaperplates 10 insightful - 3 fun10 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 3 fun -  (3 children)

75% feminine

31% masculine

Why is being an introvert associated with femininity?

Likable? Which gender is stereotypically more likable than the other?

Loyal, affectionate and loves children are how you describe the family dog.

[–]Porcelain_QuetzalTabby without Ears 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Since femininity as concept is sexist its not surprising that beeing an introvert is considered feminine, especially in the western world [I don't know enough about the east to make any judgment]

Women were always expected to sit back, listen and were expected to care wether someone liked them or not. Introverted and likable describe these really well imo.

[–]worried19[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

It's weird, through, because the silent, loner type is also a male stereotype.

Women are presupposed to be gossipy and social.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

True. Like every "wandering ronin" story ever.

[–]worried19[S] 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I got 78% masculine and 3% feminine, putting me in the "extremely masculine" category. No surprise there. I always score very masculine on these types of tests.

[–]Spikygrasspod 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Oh shit, I'm low masculine and very low feminine. I'm nothingggg I'm some sort of neutral human.

[–]worried19[S] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Ha, you're closer to abolishing gender than any of us.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Yes! Super-evolved. 😄

[–]peakingatthemomentTranssexual (natal male), HSTS 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

My score was 5% masculine and 81% feminine, which says I’m extremely feminine. This is how I always score on these tests so I’m not surprised.

[–]worried19[S] 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (9 children)

Same here, but in reverse. I always score extremely masculine.

[–]peakingatthemomentTranssexual (natal male), HSTS 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

Hooray for (extremely) not conforming to (natal) sex stereotypes. It’s so interesting that we’re totally flipped for gender expression, but I feel like we’re super similar for sexual preferences from talking with you in that thread. 🙃

[–]worried19[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

That is interesting. I wonder if we're outliers. I probably am. Most women as masculine as I am are lesbian or at least bisexual.

[–]Seahorse 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

You'd be surprised I have a lot of friends and family that are on par with my masculinity and are heterosexual.

The thing I've noticed is the women that are non conforming tend to be very practical in general.

[–]worried19[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I think I fit that stereotype. Very practical and just interested in plain, simple things in life.

It's interesting that you know extremely GNC straight women. Like, full on men's haircuts and men's clothing 24/7?

[–]Seahorse 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I don't know about men's haircuts but yes short hair (short back and sides) and occasionally men's clothing (usually fishing or sporting attire lol).

There's probably a lot around that people immediately clock as lesbian (including me I'm guilty of it lol) but aren't necessarily.

[–]worried19[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I feel like that's a level of nonconformity that's still somewhat acceptable for straight women. Like if those women got invited to a wedding, would they wear a men's suit and tie? Or would they go along with the social expectations of femininity in certain settings? Men's haircuts send a different social message than just short hair in general, as does wearing men's clothing in all situations.

[–]Seahorse 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

While you're correct, I'm from a small region with fairly backwards views so even the slightest hint of masculinity is bad.

I know because I dressed feminine even as gay person up until a few years ago. I don't even wear exclusively men's clothes (mix and match) but I get glared at and looks daily.

[–]peakingatthemomentTranssexual (natal male), HSTS 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

We might both be, but you probably more so because, for the reasons you said. My gender expression has always made it where people (correctly) assumed my sexual orientation even when I was little and it wasn’t really there yet. I doubt people did that with you.

[–]worried19[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You're definitely right. I started getting called a lesbian when I was 11. At that point, I hadn't entered puberty yet, so I just figured they were correct. It wasn't until almost a year later that I realized I was actually attracted to guys.

[–]SnowAssMan 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

My issues with the test:

  1. You know exactly which traits to agree or disagree with in order to get the results that you want (even if it's unconscious).

  2. There are only 2 outcomes. Even if you're right in the middle the test still says 50% macs 50% fem... uh, wouldn't that be neutral?

  3. 50% of all the traits in the test are either (supposedly) masculine or feminine, but all traits that exist in the real world aren't that evenly distributed.

  4. A single word isn't really enough, especially words like "compassionate". When prompting an actor you don't simply tell them the adjective of how they should feel. You need situations/contexts for more accurate results. Words on their own can easily be misinterpreted, not to mention the fact that all these words are all brimming over with connotation.

[–]reluctant_commenter 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I am kind of a nerd about tests like this, so I hope you don't mind me responding.

  1. Unfortunately most psych tests are like this. There's a lot of evidence to show that overall, people are pretty accurate on these tests! But there is probably a significant minority who do lie, for various reasons. And can very easily, as you mentioned.
  2. Not sure what you mean by neutral, but in the way they operationalized this test, masculinity is a 0-100 scale of its own and so is femininity. They don't cancel each other out, but rather, someone who scores super low on both is harder to pin down, period, regarding societal gender expectations.
  3. Most of these traits have a normal distribution. I think it's fair to say not all the traits in this test are equally gendered. But you have a good point; and in fact, I am pretty sure this test is not carefully weighted, because the title page said it's based on Sandra Bem's work and her test was not designed with statistical distributions in mind (unlike many psych tests!).
  4. Yeah, one-word adjectives might be a little rough. I think they can be prone to misunderstanding.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

How do you know they're accurate?

I find it hard answer these questions. Am I soothing? Sometimes. Am I likable? Sometimes. Am I jealous? Sometimes.

[–]reluctant_commenter 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

One of the ways researchers actually check whether or not people are responding accurately is by having them take the questionnaire, then having that person's close acquaintances score them on it. Of course-- there are a lot of exceptions to this. For example, if the test has poor and vague wording, then the person's self-score will probably differ a lot from what their friends think they would score on it. Also, some scales are harder for friends to guess at than others. A friend is probably a lot better at evaluating how outgoing you are than they are at guessing your current state of mental health.

But, regarding this particular questionnaire-- there are actually a lot of problems. https://psycnet.apa.org/record/1980-29271-001

Because some of the items in this questionnaire are so obviously more socially desirable, or less socially desirable, you don't get as much insight from people's answers on the questionnaire because people are prone to responding in a socially desirable way.

[–]Seahorse 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

86% Masc and 47% Fem (how does that work?)

That's about right but the questions are rubbish.

Casually masculine apparently which is correct I guess.

[–]RobertTheDemon 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

64% masc, 33% fem

That's a very stereotypical quiz lmao

[–]theblackfleet 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I took this test in 1995 as part of my psych degree. It's not meant to be a device for gender dysphoria. I find this test really ridiculous. The only way it makes sense is due to the fact that we live in a patriarchal world that rewards masculine traits in males but punishes it in females.

[–]reluctant_commenter 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right, it's not for gender dysphoria. No one thinks so though, right? Maybe people got confused.

[–]Lapis_Lazuli 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Average masculine (39%), low feminine (33%), undifferentiated androgynous.

[–]divingrightintowork 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

me too!

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

According to the test, my gender role adherence is 78% masculine, 36% feminine. TBH I think the majority of my "feminine" qualities are relational to puppies. 😄

[–]worried19[S] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Ha, mine too. I will snuggle the shit out of a puppy, but don't hand me a human baby. I wouldn't know what to do with it.

[–]burninglikeabridge 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I got 52% feminine and 48% masculine for "casually feminine". Which is basically me.

[–]divingrightintowork 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

That's so weird I was 53% male - 44% female and some how was "Undifferentiated androgen"

[–]burninglikeabridge 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Weird.

[–]emptiedriver 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I got 25/44 "casually feminine" and it seems sort of reasonable to me, but in answering most of the questions I felt either like I was making a random guess or that I wanted to provide an explanation for what I meant by that word...

Still, less than average gender-typical behavior in either direction but slightly more feminine than masculine seems about right. I wonder even if how strong your choices are is a trait of whether you are being masculine or feminine...

[–]VioletRemihomosexual female (aka - lesbian) 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Test looks extremely sexist, like it came out of 1800s. Majority of women I know would end up very masculine by this test. Is it how those Mermaids are determening who is transgender? Gender/queer theory is a pinnacle of misogyny.

This: https://i.imgur.com/Trd62Nn.png

97% Masculine and 25% Feminine.

While I am presenting very feminine, I am not gender-non-conforming by looks or actions in most cases. I never is taken as a man in real life or in the internet or by phone (at least post my rebellious period and depression). A lot of people saying that I am one of most feminine woman they've ever encountered. And yet test says I am almost 100% masculine. Sexist stereotypes from two centuries ago being sexist stereotypes.

Just because I am working as boss does not mean I am a man. Just because I am sceptical and have scientific degree does not mean I am a man. Just because I don't want kids does not mean I am a man. Just because I don't have mood swings does not mean I am a man - actually it should be other way around, as men are much easier and much more often changing their mood than women (that is why it is called sexist stereotype and not sexist pattern, I guess).

[–]Porcelain_QuetzalTabby without Ears 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

33% Masc 44%Fem putting me in the Undifferentiated-Androgynous category. I'm not surprised.

[–]DistantGlimmer 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

28/44 "Casually Feminine". Actually seems pretty accurate to how I would see myself. (although yes there are obvious sexist assumptions here and I imagine answers would vary somewhat based on mood and other things).

[–]reluctant_commenter 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)
