Because everything after the year 2000 is supposed to be "the future." Like the smartphones, AI, and satellites we currently have that were just science fiction 30 years ago.

satellites were 1960s (Arthur C Clkark predicted them in 1940s)

it is a current dystopia and any techno shit now also is the equivalent of "boob tube" of 50 years ago
