Is 400$ for a bare bones XP/98 duel boot laptop price gouging? What happened and why are they all this price for something unknown?

Nope, they're trying to fuck you in the ass with Fast Orange for lube. There's waaaay cheaper old laptops to be had.

For parts only. This isn't 2014 where cheap laptops were a dime a dozen it seems:

One really good looking laptop almost had me but further down it had a bad CMOS and no audio drivers but the price was 112$. No thanks. The description said they couldn't get sound to pipe out of it and that was the cheapest.
