Chicago is an American city. News from that city reported on a gruesome attack by Rottweilers against a woman who was out jogging in St. Charles.

Sure, but given that American Pit Bull Terriers are responsible for most US dog attack fatalities, over 16 times higher than any other dog breed, you'd figure that that, not a German breed, would be the breed that AI would choose to represent the USA.

Pitbulls are generally nice dogs. The only reason they're so dangerous is because of how unbelievably strong they are, and they are a very popular breed. It's just bound to happen that someone's pitbull will get a brain tumor or something, and because they have a massive jaw, razor-sharp teeth, and incredible pain tolerance, that could be a disaster.

Rottweillers on the other hand...they aren't exactly mean either, but they tend to be a bit territorial and paranoid about strangers. And they are much larger and even stronger than a pitbull. However there aren't that many around. If there were an equal number of Rottweillers and pitbulls, the Rottweiller stats would definitely be worse.

Pitbulls are everywhere. There are barely Rottweilers. Of course pitbull bites are more common. The Rottweiler could be the meanest dog in the world, but if it doesn't have the population it's not going to have the bites.

Pitbulls are not everywhere.

They make up ~8% of the total U.S. dog population.

But they're responsible for the highest percentage of bites.

There's no getting around it, there's just something seriously wrong with pitbulls.

That's not how statistics work. There's something like 10x more pitbulls than Rottweilers. So just to match the pitbull numbers, Rottweilers would have to be a full 10x more aggressive than pitbulls. But if you control for population, Rottweilers turn out even more dangerous.

Also, I think 8% is a pretty big percentage for a single breed. That would mean almost 1 in every 10 dogs you see will be a pitbull.

Ugh.

I'm not trying to hate on Rottweilers. I'm sure most of them are just doing what they think is best. But they are also one of the more dangerous breeds.
