Biases, Belief and Information: How does one decide? by althekemist in AskSaidIt

Thank you for your opinion. I believe this thread would be good for people who are new to saidit.

I am glad you and d3rr had the time to post at least one comment to this thread. I also appreciate u/Tom_Bombadil questioning me and my intents.

Bias can be rather difficult for a person to envision operating within their mental workings. In one way if a person cannot explain why they like or dislike something, an idea, this type of patriotism or that one then bias might be part to most of the premise for their opinion. If there is only one of two answers/conclusions, like voting up or down than you will be manipulated into thinking within a binary conclusion. How about a maybe button that is in-between for those who don't have a yes or no judgment on said idea/subject.

...thank you for the conversation...create a great day...

It's difficult to begin the process of examining one's biases without first accepting their existence. It's difficult to free one's mind from external influence, without coming to terms with some uncomfortable realities.

I agree and your quote above is one of the reasons I posted my questions/s. I wanted the community to respond. I am pleasantly surprised two of the administrators came to give opinion/comment. I wanted to engage a conversation about the basics of how the mind can be convinced to do something it may not want to. This last sentence can be ridiculous at first examination. How can my mind do something I may not want to...LOL? Biases can be hidden within mind and the one in charge may or may not investigate to see if biases exist. Hence, you wrote, >These biases are an effective means of social mental control.

I am of the mind to get a conversation going on Saidit about how saiditers became aware of bias in their own life. And how biases can be used to manipulate mental processes in each of us.

Hi magnora7,

It has been a while since you and I have exchanged words. I believe it was on reddit the last time. Thank you for starting Saidit and thank the others i don't know about that help you.

Yes, my questions at first glance seem naive. I felt these simple questions needed to be asked and discussed. I don't think you can stop misinformation. It was not my intent to suggest it is possible. I was putting the idea of truth to the test and how it applies to each of us and the reasons Saidit was created.

The bias of a sold-out admin is as good or bad as the intentions and needs of the consumer buying into to said bias...or not. Customer and seller have the same bias and it is all good. You and I share a bias based in the reasoning saidit was created. Hence, I post a challenging subject matter to asksaidit. I want to know what the saidit community thinks about bias, unbiased, true, truth and how one assess what is fake and what is not.

How is a new Saidit person to assess how unsold-out the admins are or are not? Bias is going to be part of the picture and it is very individual. Yet, to explore the question contains value for Saidit's admins and the community...NO?

Am I all alone on the idea a discussion of these unanswerable, simple and possibly naive questions are of value?

Hello Tom,

In fact, it was happening at the time you read that article; except that the authors assumption was predicated on the fact that they were winning (at the time), and your brain was under their control.

If you believe this due to one post of mine. I am not sure what to think. I...as saidit professes we do...I challenge saidit and already my mind is under some one else's control. I was attempting a discussion of the topic presented. I am so sad. I enjoy saidit and am disappointed the second comment on my challenging post degenerates to...me being under someone else's control.

I suspect that the missing downvote feature is quite alarming to those with less than honorable intentions. The SaidIt admins are hardened veterans of many a shill encounter.

I don't think I have voted on anything since Saidit was created. I am uninterested in the voting fiasco. I don't care about point systems on social media. I don't come to Saidit to get light bulbs or smiley faces.

I am not interested in pissing you off, but It feels from the tone of your response I hit a nerve. Please, take the time to read magnora7's response below. A discussion between equals is all I ask. I apologize if I have upset you, it was not intended.

Personally, I don't want to be the one telling other people how to think, feel and act...about anything. To think such a thing possible associates hubris (imho). Yet, how do all of us figure a new way to all get along better than we do collectively at this time? If no one person has the right to tell another how to feel, think, and act how do we get along?

I wish for peaceful change. I am inclined to feel it resides within each of us billions.

Hence, e-prime, memetics and definitions of belief connected to is are ideas I share with you. Two forms of to be in one sentence was fun. Memetics associates mental content with behavior. Humans seem to have been telling each other how to behave for centuries. Is there another way?

I don't have the answer. Yet, it is still within us.

BTW, I would love a conversation with a Buddhist concerning e-prime. I'm interested to have the same conversation with an existentialist.

How about the evolution of no revolution? Maybe, its extinction of revolution by natural selection? I cannot live without sarcasm as humor. It helps me laugh at myself or is that with myself? Sarcasm helps me question myself like I question others. I helps me seek what ever truth means. Sharing our little individual truisms seems to be a way to our similarities as humans. At the core of all of us resides similarity and difference transforms to insignificance.

I wish you all the luck in your work for change...create a great day...

Hello Jason, (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=dear+Mr.+watterson&t=ffsb&ia=web)

I respect your passion, persistence and perspectives to wake the masses. It was funny to see your picture on InfoGalactic. If not for the blue eye's and age difference we might be confused as twins or brothers.

I am a few years older and have mellowed out some from my passions of youth (to help wake people). I remember telling my scientist work mates (1992 or so) how the establishment was going to take some 40-50% of their 401K value. I based this on a guess in my mind of how much money was being placed in funds on the market every month by companies running other companies employee's 401K contributions. I was labeled by words defining me as not worth listening to. It took some years and 9/11, but the 2008 crash came and I always wonder if anyone calling me names remembers what I told them. The funnier thing was I had no idea they where going to take homes, businesses, cars and things as well as your savings. How naive can I be? I mean really, TARP is such a low tech word for covering your ASSets. The hubris of these overlords is flabbergasting and humorous at the same time. A tarp is something you through over something to cover it up...I laugh my ass off. What better place to hide than right in front of your face.

Question: After you wake minds what do you plan on doing with these minds? Where do you point attention and intention? What happens after a person wakes to the simple fact authority does not by nature tell the entire truth?

These questions and ideas I express to you in this post are why I ask you to define words such as truth, true, and compare the use of is and belief (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-Prime). Maybe, just maybe the first step is to show how authority based in the structure of a pyramid does not host truth. After trust has been broken and dusted off mental shelves how do your rebuild it...without a pyramid as the base structure? OR if it is a pyramid as the metaphorical structure how do you build it with total trust of the humans at the top by the humans at the bottom?

If your view, mental perspective of the world is formed from the top of a pyramid how can you relate to the other's perspective built from the bottom of the pyramid? Waking minds is a tricky business and acronyms will be watching.

I am not as expert in anything. Yet, create opinions as good as the next person. IMHO, Truth seeking is a personal trip.

We and others can share our personal experiences with the concept of "truth". For instance, I believe we all share an inner world and at it's core resides similarity. At the core difference becomes insignificant. I can believe this all i want yet, our world is as it is.

How does your community seek truth? How do all of you define >truth.

Sorry, I cannot help but throw in some of my bullshit with this last question.

What is the memetic distance between the words is and believe?

I attempt to expose my biases to myself as much as possible...eating a red pill? I strive to know as much as possible and believe as little as I can.

I enjoyed the matrix trilogy. I enjoy cogitating philosophical ideas. I enjoyed the video posted and the analysis of the Matrix.

I can watch people completely disagree about something and still agree with both of them.

Not sure if I "agree" with both, but most certainly find agreement in part with both sides of said disagreement. Not being able to cognate both sides effectively, compromise might not be in the dictionary? Kudos to you!

So, there is no such thing as the one? The idea of western religion's savior is another control factor. This is powerful information for modern culture...to at the least cogitate upon. Mental mastication is akin to bubble gum for the mind.

Yet, the brothers hide this concept (no savior just control) within philosophical discussions, which is not a main stream reason to experience an action/adventure movie. Plus, Revolution gives you back "the one". Neo negotiates/fights to save the duplicitous world culture he was born into...ha ha ha. The more it changes the more it stays the same.

Hollywood does not want to wake up minds. Critics of art seem to sway too far to one side or the other and that sells YouTube videos. The entire video is based in this guys preconceived notions of what he wanted to see and low and behold the creators disappointed him.

Duality has a tendency to flip and twist around itself to the opposite polarity. The opposite of that, which is intended (purpose/function) of said institution.

The Church has and does represent GOOD and rejects all evil. Evil and Good represent a simple duality in our human existence. Now the underbelly of Church goodness has been exposed...children...really! This is a special kind of evil to prey on children. Makes one question how priests spell pray.

Simple concept: Tolkien expressed it in the fellowship of the Ring. No! Frodo I cannot pick up the ring for I will attempt to do good...but I will become evil within my good purposes (paraphrased/bastardized for this post, yet same message Tolkien is the better writer between us).

"The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense..." Buckminster Fuller by EndlessSunflowers in WayOfTheBern

[–]althekemist 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Buckminster Fuller is one of my heroes. Einstein is another one. Here are two quotes from Einstein and one from Mr. Fuller in the middle. The three together fit the message in posted quote.

Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions, which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions.
- Albert Einstein
The things to do are: the things that need doing: that you see need to be done,
and that no one else seems to see need to be done. Then you will conceive your own way
of doing that, which needs to be done --that no one else has told you to do or how to do it.
This will bring out the real you that often gets buried inside a character that has acquired a
superficial array of behaviors induced or imposed by others on the individual.”
-R. Buckminster Fuller
The significant problems we face today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.
- Albert Einstein

Einstein also said something to the effect: If humans do not expand familial love out ward towards others not of family we may not make it as a species.
