I'm not confident this isn't more than a bit of a nothing burger. Faster smaller writes and slower bigger writes seem like an improvement based on the use case they will actually see. Sure it's shady. But it's not unforgivable and seems to be more of a sidegrade at best or a compromise at worst. Not to play the "but they did it too" game, but ADATA and WD seem to have done an all-around downgrade on their widely-covered drive.

Cable car accident in Italy; 14 dead, only a 5-year-old survived. by Aufer in WatchPeopleDie

[–]Southbound06 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Apparently the car's emergency brakes were disabled using maintenance brake clamps. If you look closely at other videos of this cable caryou can identify them by the fact they are painted RED. They were probably failing and slowly adding more and more drag to the cable, gradually damaging it and instigating a failure.

The article uses Liberal so that it can get easy clicks. If you've patrolled the_donald on reddit before it was banned, pretty much every post was "liburals taking our rights!1!" If they used the right terms they wouldn't get as many clicks. Most of the people who want to read these sorts of articles aren't the people who want to actually learn about what the far left is doing, but instead they want to hear about what they think it's doing.

I would not recommend Linux to a Windows user at all, because they prefer do do work on their computer instead of working on their computer. AMD OPENCL support is also spotty at best, and abysmal and non-functional at worst. If you want a Windows to Linux transition that's actually nice, Ubuntu with Unity 7 is better than mint because everything is right there, as Windows 7 or 10 would have it laid out. Mint has too many nested menus for my taste, and drop-down menus being deselected if you don't hover your mouse over them is a deal breaker for me. It's also a tad bland like Windows 10, Ubuntu with GDM or Unity at least looks interesting with transparency and dark mode.

How are people so confident in being this dumb? There is no virus hoax and "overthrowing the trump administration" is just a way of saying "See, you're in the wrong. Now tell me I'm right and super smart because I'm seeing through all this bullshit that definitely exists with no proof at all." People are certainly dying from covid and burying your head in the sand for someone who couldn't give a shit less about you is astounding.

Wireless is a trap by Entropick in technology

[–]Southbound06 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

A wired network is always a good idea to run routers and APs together. A hardwired network backbone will always be faster than a wireless bridge. But unless you're doing things like mass computation or video editing off a NAS server, Wireless is almost always "fast enough" if you don't have a NAS to regularly access and if you don't care about latency all that much. I use WiFi on everything except for my servers. I have no complaints in terms of performance. IMO this "wireless is slow" business is a tad overblown. Yes, there's truth behind it, but I'm not convinced something like my laptop needs an Ethernet cable plugged in at all times, or that my gaming PC needs its own cable run to lower my latency by 1-2 ms
