Actor Not Sure if He's Supposed to Support Israel or Palestine by xoenix in whatever

I know so many real life people like this. They have no thought of their own, and their entire personality is centered on appearing 'right'. I don't know why I attract these people. Supposedly it's because I'm kind. bleh.

Hamas casually reveal why Gaza doesn't have running water even though foreign donors keep paying for installation by Site_rly_sux in WorldPolitics

"Why would Isreal do this" meme. :p This is the sort of gold that comes when you let actual free speech happen. People can see just how fucking evil Hamas is. Israel has its problems, but there's 'normal' corruption (that shouldn't exist) and then there's actual fucking evil.

Doctors Can No Longer Question Anything the Vaccine Industry Calls ‘Science’ Or They Get Targeted for De-Licensing by Dr. Richard ‘Misinformation’ Baron by [deleted] in conspiracy

Something I didn't understand for the longest time...the reason doctors want you to come in for routine checkups is that differential analysis is one of the only ways they have to know something is wrong. Sure, there are tests for some things, like the Flu, or strep. But when it comes to more complex issues? Is your blood pressure high, or is that normal for you. Is your body 1 degree hotter than normal, or do you always run hot? Etc, etc. Once I realized modern medicine was largely differential analysis...let's just say that was a horrifying thought.

I get paid nearly what doctors do, but I actually know what is going on and why in my job. Holy shit doctors are charging a lot of money for not having much in the way of answers.

Tell someone who says they "believe in the science" that science is as much a religion as Christianity and watch them lose their minds. But...it's very much true. Though modern science (post COVID, or certainly post DSM-V) is more like the cults in Waco, People's Temple, or Heaven's Gate. Which is...disturbing.

A lot of veterans getting out of combat arms in the military are finding that they have to do their own medical research in order to heal. When doctors make you worse instead of better, something is VERY wrong.

CloudFlare check sucks by binaryblob in AskSaidIt

[–]Kingdud 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Part of why the cloudflare check is as bad as it is stems from the fact that if you don't protect your instance from DDOS, cloudflare drops you as a customer. So basically "use our DDOS guard, or we drop you as a customer!" Why? Mostly business costing. If you're big enough to have the kind of website traffic that looks like a DDOS, then they want to charge you more than their cheapest tier, but they can't say "Hey, you're successful, give us our cut" because then you look like Unity. So, instead, they just make the user experience bad in the hopes that the hosting provider cares about their users and is too stupid to realize they're being had.

Does anyone know about video editing? by [deleted] in AskSaidIt

[–]Kingdud 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, so with FFMPEG you'd tell it "I want from 00:00:00.000 to 00:01:13.240 extracted as 'clip1' via 'copy' (so don't re-encode it). Then a separate command would be 'concatenate clips 1-100 together and name the output movie.mkv' There is a HUGE amount of detail. Like, you can change what default subtitles are, change default audio tracks. Copy only certain subtitles/audio tracks, insert new subtitles/audio tracks, etc. But all that commandlinefu is really hard to learn and not super well documented. You'd be shocked to learn how many commercial video editors just use ffmpeg for the actual grunt work of encoding though.

If you don't mind a CLI interface and hard mode, ffmpeg can do that. Handbrake adds a basic GUI. Other tools add more advanced GUIs on top of that.

Compared to 2 years ago, the bans are nuts. But compared to pre-blackout, yeah, I suppose so.

Plenty of places seem 'alive', but the moderators are in UBER crackdown. Perma bans for any offense. And if you tell the mods "Hey, you're a piece of shit, remove head from asshole." then you get a site-wide warning (and eventual permaban) from the admins for 'moderator harassment'. So the moderators have 0 incentive to do anything but double-down on their bullshit. This is how you create a dystopian hell.

How did the former left turn into total cultural puritans? by zherka in whatever

[–]Kingdud 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The current left is very authoritarian. That's what you're seeing. Ron Paul woke up the libertarian spirit and idealism of the right. So the right has been pushing for more libertarian ideals (literally the opposite of authoritarianism) and the left has been pushing for more authoritarian policies because absolute power corrupts absolutely.

How do we fix it? Enforce anti-trust laws. Break up Amazon, Google, Facebook. Deregulate to the point that competition is possible, and when you do regulate, you do it from the standpoint of "The end product must be X, and the waste products can be no less than Y". Imagine you were regulating a bullet. The casing outer dimensions, pressure tolerance of the case, head spacing of the bullet would all be regulated. But there would be other specs that would NOT be regulated: materials used in the case/bullet. Maximum/minimum weight of the bullet. Maximum pressure generated by the bullet. Primer and flash hole design. Case wall thickness (who cares, as long as it can withstand the pressure). The market will decide whether the end result is viable or not.

The minute any business gets 'too big to fail' that is a sign that: 1) Your anti-trust regulations failed. 2) that business 100000% needs to fail!

Judge rules Donald Trump defrauded banks, insurers while building real estate empire by ActuallyNot in news

Louis Rossmann has a 50+ video playlist where he walks around NYC measuring commercial real estate. 3x is kinda normal for NYC. No joke. Anywhere from 50-300% inflation of sqftage is normal there. "It's not lying, it's commercial real estate" is a mug he sells because of that experience. So...if they're going to go after anyone besides Trump (re: in addition to) then this is fine. If not, it's just a soviet show trial.

I made my first reddit account, circa 2010ish, because they put atheism on the front page. A subreddit so toxic that it was the first subreddit to double down on its toxicity and get removed from the frontpage after the increased attention made them worse, instead of better. That event, plus the death of Aaron, cemented the site's decline.
