I figured that I should at least take a look at mastadon, the site that Dems say is an alternative to Twitter.

Ok, I am registered and after reading about three posts, look what I see..
This is heavy handed moderation just like Reddit and like Twitter was pre-musk.
Fk mastadon.

If Democrats recommend it, then you can expect North Korea level censorship.

The more Mastodon is flooded by the purist Twat refugees, the more everyone will go flocking back to Twitter. At least they can bitch about Musk there without getting cancelled.

Mastadon is federated. That means it is semi-decentralized; Mastadon didn't ban the person, according to the screenshot, the specific server "mastadon.online" did.
You can start your own Mastadon server, with your own rules, and connect it to the other Mastadon servers. The other servers may decide to block your server or your users, but only from accessing their server and their server's users.

I don't probably understand. What is the difference in using mastadon and just running my own forum site?

If you think of it more like Twitter, you can post like a blog, follow people's posts, or send direct messages to users. Then it is like a few dozen Twitter websites ran by different people, each with their own rules and own little user base. Then they connect all those Twitters together, so people can follow, be followed, and message users on other, 'foreign', Twitters, making the dozen separate smaller Twitter websites into a large federation of many. To help you meet and friend/follow people from foreign Twitter websites, they usually have a mingling area, with like a global feed from all of them. They usually call this "federverse" or some name based on the word federated.

The idea of it is good, but the public servers are a shit show. I think we would be better off with something than ran your own personal server on your phone, or computer. That way there is nobody to censor you. You could be blocked by someone else, but you couldn't be blocked by the network.
You could be blocked by someone else, but you couldn't be blocked by the network.
exactly... i can't see why someone couldn't develop the app which allows me to operate my own forum and then you could run the app and operate your own forum AND we merge the two forums by inviting the other person and accepting the invitation.
when someone manages to develop a "moderator-less" forum, that will be the bomb.
spammers will be out of business. trolls and shills will be neutralized.
