    People that kvetch about colonialism shouldn't be taken seriously. If any other race were the primary dominant seafarers in history, they would do the same thing, except the atrocities would probably be worse.

      It was more a counterpoint to the constant refrains of white-shaming "Oh without the evils of the colonizers' oppression, the world would be completely peaceful, and everyone would have perfect lives" that we encounter in various public avenues.

      I think the fact that you mentioned colonialism strictly in terms of a shameful and violent thing, made me want to push back a little. Not saying to take pride per se, just to avoid the shaming language.

      FWIW none of my ancestors had shit to do with colonialism but I'm still shamed about it because I'm a white American
