Saw this film mentioned constantly in contexts such as this for years so I finally sat down and watched it about a month ago. I can confidently say it is mediocre as hell and massively overrated. I doubt many of the people who make videos like this have actually watched it and aren't just regurgitating what they've seen in similar videos like some film review version of a game of telephone. While the cinematography is very unique and there are a couple of impressive shots (the bombing of the forest for instance), it doesn't really add to the plot in any meaningful way. All the scenes/screens you've probably seen of the boy mugging at the camera are not reasonable reactions to any specific horror being witnessed by the boy and are literally just poorly acted, non sequitur mugging for the sake of mugging. Truly one of the most absurdly overrated films I've ever seen.
