What was the problem, were they trapped in that hold?

Bucks fight by crashing their antlers together. The loser runs off and the winner gets to have sex with the does. On rare occasion they get tangled up, can't get apart, and usually starve to death.

yep. if you do a search you'll find a few other videos of this happening and being separated in this fashion. Pretty amazing every time.

It almost looked like the bucks knew what the guy was planning on doing and were intentionally holding still since they were standing as best they could in order to give him a clean shot and not being overly spooked by him being so close. In fact, I'd argue that that was exactly what they were doing.

Fascinating. Those animals would be long gone normally. Locking heads and waiting the other out just to get laid. I'm glad my instincts aren't that strong.
