He started the war. Doesn't mean it's only his fault, but he certainly did a crap job at protecting the interests of his people, didn't he?

truth is war was inevitable after WWI and the reparations germany had to pay, and the alliances countries besides germany made, and many predicted that at the time. If it wasn't hitler someone would have been chancellor of germany and leading them to war. That being said I guess you mean his only mistake was not being more ruthless, actually doing a holocaust, and killing more.

He could have started by not paying the reparations instead. You think he could have said: "Okay, so, you know, we kinda built a strong war machine here, so you can fuck off with your reparations or start another very constly war that nobody knows if you will win it." Or he could have not attacked American civilian vessels in his god complex, and maybe he could have actually won. Or he could have not taken advantage of deeply ingrained racism in the population to blame an entire race of people for the situation of WW1, and maybe history wouldn't judge him as harshly as it does, for, you know, the actual holocaust that happened. Just some ideas here.
