lol look at that title. Sets up and knocks down a strawman for itself.

If it "Sounds like something a filthy colonizer would do" then why did you suggest it in the first place?

Because a natural reaction that Leftists have is authoritarianism. Whenever anything goes against their moral values, the first response is to remove the people's agency and make "correct" choices for them. You see it all the time in the West. Legislating morality.

But when Africa is concerned, they have the same reaction, and then you point out that they just recapitulated colonialism. Whites with their civilized values coming in to show the blacks the correct way. It's hilarious. They get so angry at having their sacred values violated.

Oh, you want to....

Because a natural reaction that Leftists have....

the first response is....

they have the same reaction....

They get so angry.....

Flame wars have gotten next-level. You don't even argue with the other side. You just argue in your own head against what you imagine the other side would/might say.

Trust me, I am quite familiar with leftist thought. We all are. You can't exist without having it rammed down your throat in news, TV shows, movies, comic books, you name it. This is borne out by data. Citation: http://theindependentwhig.com/haidt-passages/haidt/conservatives-understand-liberals-better-than-liberals-understand-conservatives/

If one side understands the other better, and by extension probably their arguments better too, and still holds their position...that speaks to the strength of their position.

When faced with questions such as "One of the worst things a person could do is hurt a defenseless animal" or "Justice is the most important requirement for a society," liberals assumed that conservatives would disagree.

http://www.aei.org/publication/liberals-or-conservatives-whos-really-close-minded/

Jonathan Haidt's experiments ask liberals and conservatives to fill out questionnaires about their values, then to predict how someone from the opposite tribe would fill out the questionnaire. He finds that conservatives are able to predict liberals' answers just fine and seem to have a pretty good understanding of their worldviews, but that liberals have no idea how conservatives think or what they value.

But why "predict" responses in your head, instead of talking to another human?

It's like asking a Lakers fan what ze thinks of the Lakers. You don't need to ask zir.

But in your case, I'll bite. How should we "fix" homophobia in black African nations? Interfere with our superior culture and educate them on the "correct" attitudes? Or let them wallow in homophobia? Pick one.

Countries don't lose sovereignty unless they commit genocide or territorial aggression.

How should we "fix" homophobia in black African nations? Interfere with our superior culture

Which culture are you referring to with "we/our"?

[–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Western culture. Our culture. Whatever else could I mean?

Come now, let's have a proposed solution to this pressing problem.

[–]Gracehoper 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Have you heard of diplomacy?

[–]Gracehoper 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Ah, "Western" ;)

Historically, these sorts of "pan" cultural movements are rarely successful: pan-Arabism, pan-Africanism, pan-Westernism.

I don't see "Western culture" suddenly uniting in response to slavery or homophobia (not sure which you're talking about now). France and Germany and the UK and the US and Canada are always bickering among themselves.

So what are we to do about homophobia in Africa? Intervene? Or be isolationists who let people suffer for no reason. What's your solution?
