This was still sketchy af and DuckDuckGo is also sketchy in the search results it produces. StartPage is slightly better

Quite possible. I mean, they need to make money to keep their servers running. The only private search engine is one you build yourself by scraping the net. Outside of that, privacy is a pipe dream with search engines
