Astronaut Jim Irwin describes a crater on the far-side of the moon as having a "sea". (He flew on Apollo 15 and orbited the moon before landing, so he had a view of the other side of the moon that is not visible from earth-based telescopes.)

Because early astronomers looking through shitty telescopes thought they were literal bodies of water.

Calling every large depression on the moon a “sea” is just a holdover from that.
