Not only are those pits worthy of exploration for water (past, present, future, and/or ice, liquid, vapour) but they're also great to protect against radiation!
Intrasolar space travelers need to be cave men again because you can't just bring all the heavy radiation protection - or even build dolmens or rock huts that would be thick enough.
Also, if you found a source of water - you might be able to fill bags of water in walls as a radiation absorption barrier.
