they weren't so much giving aid to other countries but giving funding to our own military to fight germany and japan. Which yeah we should fund our own military and let it take out threats.

It is far cheaper to supply weapons to Ukraine and have them fight Russia than to have our own military fight Russia. In the former case, the US is just supplying weapons. In the latter, the US is supplying troops and weapons.

From https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/articles/2022-02-24/explainer-why-did-russia-invade-ukraine

“I think NATO, and the invitation for Ukraine to join NATO at some point in the future, is simply just a pretext to potentially invade Ukraine,” he says, referring to Russia. “Ukraine is not a member of NATO, it doesn't have any of the NATO guarantees, and so there is no hint that Ukraine will become a member of NATO soon.”

Putin, specifically, does not want Ukraine to join NATO “not because he has some principled disagreement related to the rule of law or something, it's because he has a might makes right model,” adds Bradley Bowman, the senior director of the Center on Military and Political Power at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a non-partisan research institute focused on national security and foreign policy.

“He believes, ‘Hey, Ukraine, I'm more powerful than you. And because I'm more powerful than you, Ukraine, I can tell you what to do and with whom to associate,’” Bowman says.

Beyond the concern around NATO and other demands related to weapons and transparency, Russia’s nature of expansion is also at play when it comes to Ukraine. Some Russians, Putin included, feel Russia has a claim to the former Soviet state.

You really need to keep up with the news.

One of the top UN bods has admitted the whole shitshow is because of America goading Russia by talking of Ukraine joining NATO. You can gaslight yourself but you're not fooling me or anyone else who's even vaguely looked into this.

Ukraine had not even applied for NATO membership. If Putin was really concerned about Ukraine's entry into NATO, it would not have invaded Ukraine until Ukraine applied for membership and NATO agreed to admit it.

That would mean attacking NATO and declaring WW3 you muppet

[–]Dune1032[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

incorrect since Ukraine would not yet be a member of NATO.

bad idea to fund or give them weapons

if a war is worth it let us do it ourselves

Ukrainians will fight to defend their country more ferociously than foreigners. Also, they know the terrain.

could be true. But do they have enough troops at the end of the day, Russia much bigger. Also I'd say it sucks for Ukraine the longer this goes on, will they fight for ten years just to lose the territory?

Russia has many more troops but Western weapons are superior to Russian weapons and Ukrainian troops have higher morale.

not sure that's true but we'll see
