He's working with the notion that the Nazis knew they were evil bad guys and walked around twirling their moustaches and delighting in doing evil for its own sake, like Cobra Commander or Lex Luthor.

The right makes many mistakes but the worst one is to assume good intentions in leftists.

For instance, we could be making a mistake by assuming that this is an earnestly confused boomer who ingested the founding myth of the 20th century with his mother's milk, is as a consequence incapable of being corrected on this point and ought to be written off as such. At least he's on the right team now, we might conclude. But we'd be forgetting that this is how the right was manipulated into a weakened, defensive, toothless posture through poison pills and false dichotomies.
