On Sunday 5 July, she tweeted: “Many, myself included, believe we are watching a new kind of conversion therapy for young gay people, who are being set on a lifelong path of medicalisation that may result in the loss of their fertility and/or full sexual function.”

Oh, now she cares?

Which of those links supports the medical "transition" of minors?

[–][deleted] 12 insightful - 5 fun12 insightful - 4 fun13 insightful - 5 fun -  (16 children)

Those links were just laughs.

She's notoriously supported the overall narrative & movement she's now taking a stance against for years via Harry Potter and social media until she supported someone who got fired over a tweet and making her "true feelings" known in 2019:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/12/19/jk-rowling-tried-make-her-work-more-inclusive-then-she-tweeted-support-an-anti-trans-researcher/

"J.K. Rowling has long used the Internet to tweak the Harry Potter universe she created, surprising fans with trivial revelations from Ron Weasley’s patronus to the fact that wizards used to poop in their robes."

"The author has previously caught flak for tweaking the Harry Potter canon, often via tweets and the Pottermore website, to include more socially liberal details. In 2007, she declared to fans that Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore was gay, a detail she doubled down on this year but that never explicitly made its way into any of the books or films. In 2014, she similarly “clarified” that there were Jewish students at the wizarding school. Some have criticized these edits as self-serving, but Rowling’s tweets have seldom been called malicious. The backlash she faced after Thursday’s tweet was especially notable, given the prevalence of the LGBTQ+ community in the Harry Potter fandom."

Before that 2019 tweet, everything was gucci and she was seen as a strong supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, to the point where Harry Potter had it's own sub-fan "queer community" within the fan community, which again, Rowling did know of and support via social media:

“I think the queer Potter community is tired,” wrote Darcy, who identifies as bisexual and genderqueer and has been active in Harry Potter fandom for most of their life. The books “meant everything” to Darcy as a kid. As an adult, they worked for Harry Potter fan organizations."

Ok.So she made some characters retroactively gay.But when did she ever support the medical transition of minors??? For the love of Zeus concentrate! She is against a insane powerful cult who causes horrible physical and psychological damage to vulnerable children!!!!

Can you stop trying so hard to misunderstand the post? Rowling went along with a lot of woke cringe. That was the point. Maybe she was consistent on the transgender issue. Good for her.

Seriously, dude. Stop being reddit.

No

Because at the time when she was retconning the H.P. universe, it was mostly about gay issues and people, including her, didn't realize that young children were being pushed into medical transitions that left permanent damage.

It has only been in the last few years that this extreme form of trans activism went mainstream, and probably only in the last couple of years she realized there was a real threat here.

She's been protecting gay kids the whole time. She wanted them to have gay role models and doesn't want them to suffer unethical medical experiments and mutilation.

She wanted them to have gay role models

To be honest I think if it was really that important to her she would have included that in the original books. I think she was just coming up with "lore" after the fact for woke points. This is the same lady that jumped on the "PewDiePie is a nazi" bandwagon.

[–]Riothamus 21 insightful - 4 fun21 insightful - 3 fun22 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

You can be in favor of something without it being incredibly important to you. Remember that she wrote the books in the mid-90s. There was no harm in her retroactively making Dumbledore gay.

And in any event a good teacher's sexuality is totally irrelevant to his or her effectiveness as a teacher.

[–][deleted] 9 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Agreed. To me it looks like she went along with the woke nonsense and simply hit her limit at some point. If she decided to say "fuck it" after the fact, since she already saw the cancel mob coming for her, is another thing I'm unsure about. She might have just done what was politically convenient all along and now she is placing her bets on the transgender trend being one of the first pillars to fall. She might also be smart enough to realize that, among all the woke factions, the transgender crowd is the hardest to please, the most unreasonable, to the point that she might not even try, as it's futile to apologize to those people in particular.

I think she was just coming up with “lore” after the fact for woke points.

This, definitely. It’s also why she randomly mentioned Jewish students attended Hogwarts; before 2019 at least, she did whatever she could to seem “socially conscious”, especially if there was a situation happening, she’d step in and milk it for woke points.

Wow. How did this happen. I upvoted you.

[–]FediNetizen 16 insightful - 2 fun16 insightful - 1 fun17 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

How did this happen

A couple things:

  • As gays started gaining mainstream acceptance, and particularly in the last few years when they've gained widespread support and legal protections, the focus of lobbying efforts started to shift to the T, because these established orgs needed to be "doing activism" to keep bringing in the donations and keep their jobs.
  • A lot of people realized that in hindsight gay people should have had these rights all along, so people didn't speak up earlier because they were afraid of being seen as hateful in the way we see homophobes now.

So the result was you had this modern trans activism pushing for self-id as a legal standard, and "affirmation only" approaches to adolescent gender dysphoria cases. Also they started telling kids that GNC behavior meant you were trans, and again you didn't have people shutting that down because they were afraid of being called bigots.

You can see it now even in 2020. Rowling has done nothing but explain her reservations about men who haven't really transitioned, and GNC and autistic girls being pushed into transitioning despite basically every study that exists showing the vast majority will eventually grow out of it, and she is still getting called a bigot that wants trans people to die because of it. She's too rich and established to be cancelled, but other more vulnerable people are probably afraid to speak out still for this reason.
