This is called a proppant. It's generally a man-made ceramic. Basically when fraccing, the pressure is greatly increased within the reservoir or coal seam which generates cracks. This proppant is part of the pressuring fluids and is forced in. When the pressuring is completed the proppant holds the cracks open and increased porosity/permeability of the formation enables production.
