What's worse is that these "evil scum" don't think they are evil. Sure some make consciously do this but I suspect most do it subconsciously, or at least initially without intent before it turns into something and they get carried away with it on their mission. Few people think they are the villain, and many think they are actually trying to do good.

My recent SaidIt ban was much like this.

Transparent open clear communication is the key. Of course the ruling class and their minions are trying to corrupt our language and dialogue by confusing terms rather than clarifying them.

Sure, but it's is possible only with well-meaning like-minded people, who are also united by a perceived common interest.

What determines a common interest or the perception of what such may be? What personal traits in individuals allow for clear (honest) communication? How can well-meaning individuals and groups identify and avoid insincere deceivers/evil scum?

All I care to be united with is being fair, open, transparent, accountable, consistent, honest = uncensored truth-seeking integrity. Fail on any of those and it's no longer a legit interaction. FOTACH would be my religion and/or political party of choice.

This doesn't work with the type of person OP described. They are not motivated by truth-seeking and do not have integrity.

Sad but too true.
