I've seen it from malice, but I've seen it from stupidity, where bad faith listening caused bad understanding, and the paraphrase ended up slanderous.

Now the bad faith itself may have had malicious roots, but that applies to wider situations. Nowadays that's very common, and plausible deniability is harder to come by.

Not just stupidity. Poor reasoning and fallacious logic in smart people can be worse - just as with well-meaning SJWs and this lockdown nonsense under a blind faith in scientism.

This is an interesting point, because it begs the question: are people afflicted with 'poor reasoning and fallacious logic' really 'smart'?

well-meaning SJWs

Is there such a thing?

this lockdown nonsense under a blind faith in scientism.

Those who agree with lockdown nonsense are not (consciously) aware that they are adherents of a religion which non-adherents call 'scientism'. They are 'well-meaning' docile sheep. They believe in the 'wisdom of crowds' and other such modern tripe. Can we bring them back into our fold or should they be abandoned to the fate their shepherds have chosen for them?

This is fallacious, implying there is only one way to be smart, ignoring the vast array of perspectives and experiences people may excel at, or not.

Again there's a whole spectrum of SJW personalities - doing it for their ego to virtue signal or doing it to help, programmed or a programmer, conscious or subconscious, etc etc etc. People often have complex reasons for their thoughts and actions, whether they know it or not.

not (consciously) aware that they are adherents of a religion

Agreed, and well-recognized.

Can we bring them back into our fold or should they be abandoned to the fate their shepherds have chosen for them?

Good question. Perhaps more importantly: Should we try?
