One of the smaller pyramids was originally covered in granite, most of the stones are left fallen in the surrounding area. Our guide last summer shrugged it off as bad design putting granite on limestone, that unlike the great pyramids which had stone stolen by the Muslims to build mosques, it simply fell apart naturally over the centuries.

It's worth noting that aside from the scientific community who hold heavily religious bias over the age and meaning of ancient Egyptian history and architecture, the Muslims of Egypt have no care or respect for the ancient Egyptian history from what I witnessed, they simply profit from visitors, and are willing to thieve and sell what they can to take advantage of the monuments. The country is a shithole where people steal from eachother and litter everywhere, they do not look after the ancient ateas of Giza. The idea that they would wish to renovate anything at the cost of the Egyptians is very unrealistic.
