since when did the only country with freedom of speech written into law ban social media apps?

As I understand: speech is not the problem here. The communist chinese government is. TikTok is operated by them and is used for data mining. The app stays on in the background, the mic and camera are activated by a foreign government at will.

For example: when GPS reveals a device's location to be near sensitive locations such as a nuclear reactor, a federal building, or a political gathering, they could activate video and audio recording to gather intelligence. Ideally, they would discover who works there and how they might be bribed or blackmailed.

Also, this is an old article, and I don't think this actually ended up happening.
