They remove the clitoris, usually without anesthesia, in an attempt to prevent female orgasms. This is thought to prevent women from lusting after men. This is NOT the equivalent of circumcision- for those of you who were under that impression.

That's only the most extreme form. Most of the time, FGM is less severe than MGM.
