Actually, their dynasty (Rurik's dynasty) is genetically Finnish. Swedes just took the honor after conquering Finland and therefore declaring everything Finnish Swedish if it was positive, otherwise it was just negative. Finland/Novgorod held up well against the Mongols, whereas the rest of modern-day Russia was laid into wastelands by the Mongols, so in the 1400s, it was easy expansion into vast areas since Mongols had retreated and there was a vacuum of power and population.
