I don't really know how I feel about this, but if people were able to get the covid unemployment, what did they do with the money? I saved as much of it as I could, and am probably going to be able to pay my car off earlier than I expected, and used some of it to rent a room. Which yes, is cheaper than most rents in my area, but still, maybe part of the problem is the massive amount of overspending and buying way too expensive of things. I see people running around with expensive SUVs and gas guzzling trucks and the latest iPhone that costs hundreds of dollars while I'm driving an economical Civic and managed to find a smartphone on a huge sale so it was $80.

I can see if you have kids and student loans, but quite a lot of people who claim they can't pay rent used that $ to buy a bunch of non-essential crap so they could have fun and kept spending a lot of it on expensive takeout food. People acted like unemployment lasts forever and are surprised that they now won't be able to afford rent. They should have had the attitude that these are seriously fucked up times and that unemployment was emergency money to spend on rent FIRST and important bills and food FIRST.
