It is good that Macron is aggressive towards Putin. It is a sharp change from the 1930's when France was timid towards Hitler. However, Ukraine doesn't have the ability to retake Crimea. If France enters the war, perhaps. This is better. The UN should propose to Putin and Zelensky that Russia be permitted to occupy territory it seized from Ukraine before the February 2022 invasion although the land would legally belong to Ukraine. Russia must withdraw from all land it seized after the invasion. NATO membership will remain as it is. The UN will be obligated to defend Ukraine if Russia invades again.

Macron is the new Napoleon III

The Crimean War was fought from October 1853 to February 1856

Historian Norman Rich argues that the war was not an accident, but was sought out by the determination of the British and French not to allow Russia an honourable retreat. Both insisted on a military victory to enhance their prestige in European affairs when a non-violent peaceful political solution was available. The war then wrecked the Concert of Europe, which had long kept the peace.
