What were they thinking?

It would make sense if they were forced to do this by some other entity, but otherwise, why would you go head to head with a country that could annihilate your entire country in ten minutes with conventional weapons?

They can't plan for the consequences of their actions.

You see exactly the same thing with Palestinians, a cycle of self righteous ecstasy and celebrations when they attack and then absolute confusion and horror when there's a completely predictable response to that attack. They literally don't see it coming.
