This war going on before Russia had any troops in Ukraine. Russia put troops in Ukraine as a response to the decade of Ukrainian aggression towards the Donbas region, after begging Geneva to do something, but they refused, more-or-less laughing at them and making fun of Russia's concern that Ukraine was committing genocide in the region. The US media also made fun of that accusation.

The UN and whole world had been worried since like 2015 about the ecological danger of Ukrainian shelling the Donbas region, which was Ukraine's major industrial region, the country's main revenue. It has been totally leveled now and the danger of the mines flooding with water, contaminating drinking aquifers and causing mine gases to build up and explode, as well as the leftover underground nuclear bomb testing sealed in one mine escaping.....making Ukraine's shelling of Donbas a crazy and suicidal act for all of the continental region.

When the UN and US orchestrated a coup Ukraine for rejecting their trade deal and closely controlled and "vetted" all candidates for the election of Zelenski, the Donbas region was largely not on-board. This lost Zelenski his much needed revenue support. Ukraine only even played the dangerous game of negotiating trade with the US+EU counter-offered by Russia due to Ukraine's utter financial failure. Zelenski inherited a desperate financial failure and found that if he didn't work with the US+EU they would dispose of him, like his predecessor.

The EU+US promised lots of money, but it all hinged on US+EU tax money taken for green initiatives. Zelenski is reliant on The Green Tariff and similar programs for financial survival. It was about 2008 that Zelenski declared his plan to end mining in Donbas, the livelihood of those in the region, and turn the whole area into a green energy producing area, in hopes to milk the US+EU for more green-scam money.

So, as you can see, the war in Ukraine is largely a result of The Green New Deal and other Green energy efforts, specifically their enticement to kill your neighbors and ecologically endanger part of a contenent, for the sucker cash from Americans and Europeans, meant to support green energy.
