There seems to be some kind of "sacred cow" in Ukraine neocons are afraid of Russia getting their hands on.

Being a SciFi fan I would like to think it's a Stargate.

It's a massive money laundering machine. Nothing more.

Ukraine neocons are afraid Russia will summon Viy, the King of the Gnomes.

Viy is a novella by Nikolai Gogol, made into the excellent 1967 Russian film of the same name, with special effects by Russian FX wizard Alexsandr Ptushko. It's my favorite horror movie. In the Soviet era horror movies were forbidden as examples of Western decadence. Viy slipped through by being Russian (actually Ukrainian) folklore, which was acceptable and encouraged. Excellent adaptation of the story.

Plot twist: the reason so many US politicians are obsessed with the place isn't because of endemic corruption; it's because they want to beat the distance record.

"In the middle of my backswing?!"

Hey, you can never tell. They do say that life imitates art.
