I don't agree that they have a point, and this bit gives the game away :

Certainly this individual may not have been guilty of any heinous war crimes (although he also might have been, we don't know; 19 and 20 year olds are certainly capable of them). But that's not the point. The point is that this man is being celebrated precisely because they were a member of the Waffen SS, who fought against the Russians. They are being celebrated as a representative of military forces in close alliance with the Nazi regime in Germany, who fought and killed Russians during WWII. That's clearly fucked up.

As to why he's in Canada in the first place, Canada brought in thousands of Ukrainian Nazis at the end of WW2, at the request of USA. Because USA was already planning to use Ukraine to attack and dismember Russia, then the USSR, and they thought they needed an external base of Ukrainian Nazis to give support and legitimacy to the stay-behind Ukrainian Nazis that even then USA was supporting with money, weapons and training.

Yeah but you know, nazis weren't all bad. There were just some bad apples, right? You shouldn't put all the good ones in the same basket, it's not fair to those poor honest workers who were just following orders :'(
