After all, this was a man who for some seventy years or so was a rather popular public figure...

Evidently, you weren't around in the 1990s when this joke was making the rounds:

A woman is alone in an elevator with Donald Trump. She pulls the emergency stop, tears off her clothes, and says "Oh Donald, make me feel like a real woman!"

Trump slowly takes off his jacket and tie, unbuttons his shirt, and tosses it to the floor. He points at the shirt and says "Iron that!"

...

Trump was personally responsible for appointing judges to the U.S. Supreme Court who overturned Roe V. Wade...

Actually, the Democratic Party leadership is responsible because they nominated the (possibly) most-hated woman in America in 2016. They obviously thought Trump was even more hated and feared, but they miscalculated. Thanks, guys!

Do they mean to say that he was "a rather popular public figure" since he was about seven years old?

First mention that I remember was Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous in the mid 90s.

Didn't you know? Trump was tap dancing with Shirley Temple back in the 1930s!
