Umm...

As a result [of going NSFW], and as The Verge report, these mods are now finding themselves “logged out of their account and locked out” by “a Reddit admin account”, and their subreddits—with millions of members—are showing up as being completely unmoderated. Those former mods have also seen their accounts suspended for seven days.

I'm guessing that they did not properly justify their going NSFW, they just did it. Because they felt like it. (As far as anyone can tell)

If you're going to do it, you have to spell out exactly how and why Reddit is making you do it.
Malicious Compliance demands that. Without it, you are missing the "Compliance" part.
