If you stick around WotB, you'll be exposed to lots of classic humor, cinema, and literary references. It's very therapeutic, times being what they are.

    Interesting.

Netweasel recognized my obscure reference to the play/movie Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. The First Player has offered R&G a performance of The Rape of the Sabine Women, or rather woman, or rather Alfred:

The Player: It costs little to watch, and a little more to get caught up in the action. If that's your taste and times being what they are.

    Guildenstern: What are they?

    The Player: Indifferent.

Go for the film. Dreyfuss kills it as The First Player.

Tim Roth and Gary Oldman as R&G.

    incredibly worth it.

Is the movie called The First Player?

    [–]CaelianPost No Toasties 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

Dreyfuss is excellent. It's clear that he'd been wanting to play The First Player forever. But my dad assured me that the First Player he saw on the stage in London was even better.

Be sure to see it on wide screen. One of the best parts is when The Players perform an outstanding mime version of Hamlet to entertain Elsinore's kitchen staff. It uses the whole width of the screen.

The minor characters in R&G are the major characters in Hamlet, including Hamlet, Claudius, Gertrude, Polonius, and Ophelia. The actors in the movie are so good I wanted to see a full production of Hamlet with that same cast.

Yes! My dad saw R&G on the stage in London when it was brand new. His First Player was superb, and Dad knew Hamlet extremely well.

Do you know this play? A slaughterhouse! Eight corpses!
