  1. Except Blade Runner had the "Off-World" safety-valve to at least somewhat ease population pressures. I'm betting on social and climate-related collapse before any realistic 'colonies' are formed.

  2. In some aspects, the population is frighteningly ahead of the corporations in 1984-level surveillance, in that there's nothing the companies sell that isn't enthusiastically embraced by the consumer.

If Orwell had tried to include a scene where Proles and Outer-Party members fought over places in line to buy the latest Telescreens, his editor would have made him take it out, calling it "unbelieveable".
