Not only that, but the most obvious answer is they, themselves, for asking the question.

The answer boils down to "you're all coomers. We know you'll spend your life savings on your waifu. Therefore, we need to make all female characters in anime cute enough so you'll buy their merchandise to coom to them."

I don't much like the term late stage capitalism but if anything fits the bill waifuism definitely does.

I can appreciate the sexy character designs in a show or something to some extent as long as it doesn't become overly gratuitous to the detriment of the plot. But like why the fuck would anyone want to buy loads of merchandise for it?

I've never understood the whole figure thing. Like people will spend hundreds of dollars on some anime figurine and it's like, why? It's not an action figure. You can't do anything with it. It just sits there. It's not really fine art. It's not something you've made yourself (I give exceptions to creative people who will DIY their own stuff) it's just raw total consumerism with absolutely no real benefit to you, and hell it actually scares off girls. Why the fuck would you spend like the same amount as a nice date would cost on a fucking piece of plastic.

The answer is of course they can't get the date in the first place.

Well, it's connected to both of those reasons.

For all of humanity, you have to love SOMETHING. Whether it's the most social butterfly in the world or the biggest ace person in the world, you have to have some thing that you feel love for to make your world a little brighter. If you can't get that date, get a pet. Can't have a pet, keep a houseplant. Can't even keep a houseplant, throw yourself into work, religion, hobbies...and yes, you can't even do any hobbies, throw yourself into a fandom- and waifuism is just an example of throwing yourself headfirst into a fandom. It's kind of questionable, but even if someone's so depressed all they can do is find a character on a TV show they'll never meet- meaning they can't accept or reject them- through it...sure, whatever.

Admittedly I have a few Amiibos (even then not a lot) myself as they serve a gameplay function/bonus for Nintendo Switch games. But yes, I've never understood the purpose of non-functional figurines, such a waste of money, time, and space. Also, the correct term would be consumerism. It's pure wasteful consumerism, which is unnecessary for a functioning capitalist society (especially when you consider most of that plastic crap is made in Commie China anyways.)

It's like the Pogs. Those gotta be the worst case of it.

Amiibo is similar and I never much liked the toys to life concept or how they'd lock game content behind some plastic figurine they'd naturally not make enough of so everyone would go out and buy them for FOMO reasons. But well, I just won't buy them.

I guess I just feel like most people want to waste their money on useless plastic crap. I don't get it. Like even if I like the show that the figure comes from I can't imagine wasting money on a little plastic idol.
