I'm not a fan of the UN but in some fairness to the organization, this combination of toothless ineffectuality and fixation on nothing burger causes is exactly what the core membership wanted. Having a global organization with the means and the will to keep its various constituents firmly in hand is absolutely the last thing that the powers-that-be (or the powers-that-want-to-be) want--using it against their opposition is great, but it could be used against them just as readily--so they declawed, defanged, and neutered it early on.

So now we're left with a glorified debating society that is grossly overfunded for what it actually achieves. And like any other bureaucracy that wants to justify its budget, they have to find shit to spend their money on so that they can keep getting money to spend (and offices to staff with themselves, naturally).

Yep. The idea of a neutral forum where representatives from various countries can meet and discuss things is a good idea. The idea of a supra-national organization that can impose it's will on others? That's called an empire, which we don't really want the UN to be.

I think they've got a much bigger opinion of their importance and their influence than they actually have, and most of their projects are massive wastes of money towards what at best constitutes a PR campaign. (Like look at their sustainable development goals, first one is "eliminate all poverty worldwide by 2030" yeah good luck with that.)

It's just like my personal development goal to lose 20 kilo by Friday with diet and exercise! Wish me luck!
