I’d like to see the reasoning behind that bold claim, what services, products, sacrifices are they making that are so important to the democratic life of the US?

They're the groups who will whine the most on social media if you don't clap and tell them how special they are at random intervals, and if they whine the media will pick it up, the rest of the Democrats will think you're evil, and if they think you're evil you won't have a prayer at getting out of the primaries next time you're elected.
